So – there are a few TINY birds around that I have failed to get a picture of – Warbler varieties, and Swallows. If you would like to share local pictures, I’d love to include a link. Until then, I’ll keep trying!

At sunset, the waters start to team with life. All of the insect eating birds swarm across the waters, diving and flying in circles, soaring straight up, then diving again. All evening long, I found maybe 3-4. On the way home close to sunset, there were countless birds, but in that environment – they all look like tiny black darts. I REALLY want to know what the black and white ones are called – but I have failed to get any identification – other than black, with white underneath feathers, small, flies like a tiny kite, wings are straight triangles that flap open and closed quickly as they dart. Not sure on beak or feet colors, as they look like little black darts.
Oh for the joy of learning! With the photos taken last night – and a list of birds from Lincoln City’s Bird Guide I am relatively sure that I have been seeing a combination of Tree Swallows and Barn Swallows. One of the pics below looks like a Barn, and one a Tree. And, as luck would have it – my Handbook of Nature Study
Bible Book has 6 pages dedicated to these amazing creatures! I just can’t tell you how this gives me joy to get the mystery out!
The swarms over the water. Look closely at the little tiny black spots.
Carp in the water
Then I got to go . . . .
Our little cove of the lake – we live about in the center.
Nice shot eh?
This is as close as I got tonight. This bird is TINY. Did I mention Fast?
Found a grouping of Cattails. We are studying them on Friday. Looks like field trip time to me!
My friend took this when I dropped her off – at Regatta Park. :) Fun!
Looking over towards Holmes Rd.
I’d love to know what these birds are!
Last week we Nathan and I were out in the boat and drove by 6 Geese swimming closely together with more than 15 goslings, small yellow fuzzy – So Cute! I pulled out my trusty Canon and um. Ya. Memory card was in the laptop.
It has been stormy with huge waves in the lake ever since – but tonight – I got to go out on the lake by myself to take some pictures – picked up a friend on the other side of the lake, took some more, then drove home. On the ride home – the geese were in the exact same spot from last week. YEAH. I was too fearful of getting close, so these shots are taken at about 40 % digital zoom. . . . while driving the boat. :)
Here is a greatlink to information on Canadian Geese - complete with color sheets if you’d like to more looking. :)
It was getting past sunset, I was by myself, and still had a ways to go to get the boat home – So I clicked and Dashed. Maybe tomorrow evening if it is nice I’ll try again. :)
Here is a dark quick Video.
A friend asked me this week if I just sit lay on the dock all day waiting for birds to come by to photograph. . . .
Well, Um. . . .Ya! I do! Actually!
Here is my afternoon spot to try to capture the Warblers in the tree. I’ve yet to get one. . . .
Temperpedic Mattress and a cozy pillow with a book and coffee. I’m trying to learn the bird calls. If I lift my head, the calls change. If the boys come out, their calls REALLY freak out. When the coast is clear in their site they call their mate/buddy back and forth. There seems to always be a lookout bird making the calls, directing traffic. Really interesting!
In the morning I get dressed in my best birding outfit and sit on the dock waiting for the birds to fly by. I REALLY want to get a shot of a flying low over the water with the mirror reflection. Between 6 and 9ish the lake is flat and calm. So far, they fly in so quietly I do not hear them, or I’m not paying attention from reading my book.
So if you are ever in the mood to stop by in the morning, come around back and up the stairs, I’ll probably have plenty of blankets and coffee for ya!
I love my pansies! I have a friend who has Pansy as her favorite flower, so I plant them wherever I go – so she goes with me.
Primrose is another early spring favorite@
Banana Slug? Not my favorite – but amazing!
Not sure that a photo can capture the amount of green growth in our vacant lot next door. This winter the ground was all bare – Crazy!
Clear little stream going out to the lake from the vacant lot.
The water was like a mirror – so I hunkered down with my phone, camera and coffee to see who would fly or float by.
This little mallard floated by – to make my favorite scene! I had to zoom from the boathouse, I thought I’d scare him off if I walked to the end of the dock.
This is beautiful shot at full res/full size!
My scene prop was a floating mess of weeds. Nice!
Just cause I love ‘em. :)
Oh. I apologize in advance. We’ve been waiting all winter wondering who the first babies would be. Then – all of the birds disappeared for a few weeks. Just this week - So many birds have come to the lake. I just get an adrenaline rush trying to figure out who they all are. We are keeping our dog pretty much inside, taking her for long hikes on the beach instead. Wondering who will pick our side of the lake for babies – and today – today – it happened! Jon spotted the first babies at a neighbors house eating grass in their yard. The whole family got into the lake and swam RIGHT OVER to our yard, like they wanted a photo shoot. Oh. I was so stinking excited. So- like a foster parent, I have taken a half a million photos, 42 this morning to be exact. I’ll share a few here with you . . . . . So – ya – sorry for the paparazzi photo shoot.
This is sunset tonight – about 6:30ish pm – drinking a great white wine with an amazing soup – Oh so Yummy.
The First photo of Geese. Jon said – what are those little birds? Eating with the Geese? OH BABIES!!!! So cute. We had Canadian Geese Babies in the lake by our Deschutes Market Home, but these are the geese that wake us up each day. We LOVE them. :)
Ma and Pa take the little ones out to the little part of the lake and the most south eastern edge.
These were all taken with 40x zoom on the camera – then they swam to our lawn!! woo hoo!
At least I didn’t post all forty shots! They were SOOOO cute!
View without zoom from the deck.
Mr. Serious Overseeer. He is so funny. So SERIOUS!
Northern Flicker doesn’t care. Just bring on the grub.
